Description:


This foundation program consists of technical training in addition to the practical and essential skills related to the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Level 1 Apprenticeship program and the Commercial Transport Technician Level 1 Apprenticeship Program.

“Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic” means a person who maintains, manufactures, overhauls, reconditions and repairs equipment powered by internal combustion engines or electricity and without limiting the foregoing, including graders, loaders, shovels, tractors, trucks, forklifts, wheeled and tracked vehicles of all types used in construction, logging, sawmill, manufacturing, mining and other similar industry.

“Truck & Transport Vehicle Mechanic (Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic)” means a person who maintains, rebuilds, overhauls, reconditions, does diagnostic troubleshooting and repair of motorized commercial truck, bus and road transport equipment.

Upon completion of the first 490.5 hours of the program, learners will transition to the trade they have chosen to apprentice. This decision determines which class the learner will be in for their remaining 180 hours of study - Heavy Duty Technician Level 1 or Commercial Transport Technician Level 1 - and in what program their Level 1 Certificate will be awarded.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants will fit one of three specific groups:
  1. High school dual credit students - Grade 10 level completion that includes:
    Grade 10 English, or Career and College Preparation English 030 Intermediate English, with 67% (C+) or higher
    Grade 10 Math (Apprenticeship and Workplace Math), or Career and College Preparation Math 030 Intermediate Mathematics, with 67% (C+) or higher
  2. Adults – Submission of a high school transcript indicating Grade 10 level completion that includes:
    Grade 10 English, or Career and College Preparation English 030 Intermediate English, with 67% (C+) or higher
    Grade 10 Math (Applications or Principles), or Career and College Preparation Math 030 Intermediate Mathematics, with 67% (C+) or higher
  3. Adults or high school dual credit students – Completion of assessment:
    An applicant who does not have the above academic background is required to write an assessment in Reading Comprehension, Number Operations, Problem Solving, and Mechanical Reasoning. A minimum Grade Equivalent (GE) score of 10.0 or higher is required for Reading Comprehension, Number Operations, and Problem Solving; and an above average score (51/70, 6th Stanine) is required for Mechanical Reasoning. Based on the results of the assessment(s), applicants may be required to participate in an assessment interview to determine admissibility. Interview may be conducted via teleconference if necessary.

Additional Requirements and Supplies:
  • Purchase of textbooks. Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, coveralls, etc.)
  • Application Fee and Trades Assessment Fee (if applicable). Please refer to the Tuition Schedule.
  • Once accepted, students are required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable, non-deferrable deposit to hold a seat in the program.
  • Students are required to sign and adhere to the Trades & Apprenticeship Safety and Attendance Policy.

Application Deadline: All completed applications must be received one month prior to start of the program. Completed applications received after this date will be reviewed based on seat availability.

Safety Courses:
*If a student already possesses a valid ticket in any of the required safety courses, and can provide proof of its validity through to the program's end date, they will not be required to enroll in that particular course. Should this occur, the cost of the course(s) will be reimbursed from their overall tuition.
