Description:

In addition to the one year certificate program offered in Visual and Graphic Communication Arts, Northern Lights College offers a two year program leading toward the Associate of Arts Diploma - Fine Arts. The program is for students who may wish to transfer to Fine Arts or Art Education programs at a university, or those wanting to complete a more intensive study program than the certificate program.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants to the diploma program must meet the general admission requirements for the University Arts and Sciences program, as well as requirements of the Visual and Graphic Communication Arts program.

To apply to the University Arts and Sciences Program or to register for individual courses within the program:

  • Prospective learners need to complete a College “Application for Admission” form. Admission forms can be obtained in person from NLC Student Services or downloaded in PDF format. A one-time application fee is required.
  • Where available, secondary school and/or post-secondary transcripts should be provided to indicate that prerequisites for specific courses have been met.
  • Applicants who do not have at least a “B” in English 12 (or equivalent) or at least a “C” in a university-level English course must complete the NLC Writing Assessment before registering in English courses. Feedback on the Writing Assessment is provided to help students make informed decisions about course selection.
  • Applicants who do not have secondary school and/or post-secondary transcripts that provide documentation of prerequisites should speak with an NLC Recruiter. In these situations, entry-level skills will be evaluated as required through the Writing Assessment, the Calculus Readiness Assessment, or other assessments.
  • Candidates for the Visual and Graphic Communication Arts program are required to submit a portfolio for review by the program instructor. The portfolio should contain between 12-15 pieces of original artwork and not larger than 22" x 30". Media categories can include drawings, paintings, prints, advertising layout and lettering samples, posters, logos, computer generated work, and photographs

Career Prospects:

The program is for students who may wish to transfer to Fine Arts or Art Education programs at a university, or those wanting to complete a more intensive study program than the certificate program.

Affiliations:

The transferability of individual University Arts and Sciences courses taken at Northern Lights College is determined by the institution to which the student transfers. The BC Transfer Guide is available at student services offices, and campus libraries.

Additional Requirements and Supplies:  Lab fees may apply to science courses.

Required Minimum Grade:  An average overall grade of 'C'( cumulative GPA of 2.00 or its equivalent)

Residency Requirements:  25% of University Arts and Sciences courses

General Requirement:

  • 60 credits of first and second-year courses, with a minimum of 30 credits from Visual and Graphic Communication Arts.

Specific Requirements:

  • 30 credits Visual and Graphic Communication Arts
  • 6 credits 100 level English
  • 6 credits 200 level English or Creative Writing
  • 18 credits selected from University Arts and Sciences courses.
