Atlin Campus

Atlin is the northernmost NLC campus. The community of Atlin has a population of 400 fulltime residents, and is approximately a two-hour drive from Whitehorse, Yukon.

Atlin is located in the traditional territory of the Taku River Tlingit, and the name of the town is derived from the Tlingit word meaning big water Aa tlein – referring to the 85 mile-long lake.

At the turn of the century, Atlin was a bustling mining town with a population of 10,000 located in Discovery and the surrounding areas. Accessible at that time only by boat or dogsled, Atlin became a jumping off spot for boating trips to scenic tea gardens and glacier hikes until the 1930s. It still draws tourists today because of its striking beauty.

Today, the community consists of many entrepreneurs, outdoors enthusiasts, placer miners, retired yet active professionals, and artists as well as businesses to support the community. There are a number of historic buildings, and NLC was located for 15 years on the upper floor of the courthouse built in 1900.

The Atlin Campus supports local learners in the areas of Career and College Preparation and Adult Literacy. In addition, NLC offers public computer access and is a Community Access Program (CAP) site.
