This course teaches the participant to lead multi-day backpacking trips into the backcountry. It includes equipment selection, navigation, trip planning, group management, client care, pacing, and leadership. This course introduces the participant to equipment and skills needed for safe travel in mountainous terrain.

Course Content:
- Introduction
- Day-hiking and backpacking as an adventure tourism opportunity
- The demographics and motivations of hiking backpacking clients

- Equipment and Clothing
- The equipment that guides should carry on day hiking trips
- Compare and contrast the features of different types of daypacks and hiking boots
- Clothing appropriate for backpacking trips in different terrain and areas
- Items to be included in emergency, repair and first aid kits

- Safety and Risk Management
- Risk management plans for hiking and multi day backpacking trips
- How to handle encounters with wildlife
- Weather forecasting while in the field and dealing with unpleasant weather
- How to handle safety concerns created by client fitness levels
- Ethics and environmental issues

- Pre-trip Preparation
- Pre-trip meetings, weather checks and contingency plans
- Supplies and equipment for the trip
- Personal and group gear organization
- Pre-trip meeting with guides and clients
- Land and permit issues in Provincial, Territorial and National Parks, crown and private land
- Competence around aircrafts used for trip and potential rescues

- Expedition
- Students will plan, prepare, and guide all aspects of a backpacking trip of at least five days

Skills will include:

- Trip preparation – clothing, equipment, gear and menu planning
- Risk analysis and assessment of the trip
- Pre trip safety talk
- Group decision making
- Prepare meals for the group
- Technical hiking, navigation and camp set-up skills
- Leadership, guiding and group management
- Post trip debrief
 
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

- Plan and prepare for an extended backcountry trip including selecting a group appropriate area and route to accommodate the different skill and fitness levels of the group.
- Prepare nutritional and healthy backcountry cuisine including menu planning, food purchasing and packing, equipment selection, and prepare a backcountry kitchen safe.
- Develop an Emergency Response Plan and Risk Management Plan for a multi-day backpacking trip.
- Demonstrate a group safety talk including group expectations goals and objectives. As well, complete client pack checks, and instruct others on preventative foot care and personal hygiene in the backcountry.
- Manage a group in the backcountry including safety and security, medical attention and hazard awareness while ensuring that group goals and objectives are maintained
- Navigate both on and off trail and in alpine terrain with GPS, map and compass.
- Provide basic natural history interpretation lessons on the areas flora, fauna, culture and history.
