Calendar Description:
|
|
This intensive three-day course contains one day of classroom followed by two days of practical field exercise. The initial emphasis of the course is on developing and practicing self-rescue skills. Other objectives include an in depth look at water dynamics, hazards and obstacles, using basic rescue equipment, setting up technical rope systems, controlling in-water contact rescues. This is an essential course for anyone who may be required to perform a water rescue.

Course Content:
|
- Rescuing and extricating an accident victim from the water.
- Safely swimming in swiftwater and maneuvering so as to negotiate river hazards and obstacles at various water levels.
- Handling small inflatable boats by paddle, oar and on tether.
- Knowing the responsibilities of law-enforcement and on-scene leadership.
- Understanding swiftwater rescue iCiim organization and the response of the victim.
- Utilizing climbing and technical rescue gear applicable to swiftwater rescue.
- Fording shallow and fast-moving water utilizing various techniques.
- Crossing deep, slow-moving and fast-moving water utilizing basic climbing gear, small boats, and combinations of the two.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to
- Identify water/lake/river hazards.
- Describe basic search and rescue techniques.
- Manage the coordination of a water rescue.
- Identify hazards to self and others in the process of a rescue.
- Identify basic water/river hydrology.
- Demonstrate practical river/water rescue practices.
- Describe how a rescue integrates with wilderness first aid and other on the spot required skills.

over-the-bank type situations, as well as, how to assist
technician level rope rescuers in high angle
environments. Special emphasis is placed on maintaining
the safety of rescuers, patients, and bystanders.
