Description:
The skills of the geomatics technologist are in demand in a large number of businesses and industries. Surveying and photogrammetry are essential to many phases of industrial and business development including construction, natural resource exploration and development, and mapping. Surveying techniques have become more sophisticated through the use of electronic devices and computers so that shape, size and location of objects or land masses can be determined with precision and speed.

The Geomatics Engineering Technology program is offered in partnership between Northern Lights College and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Year 1 of this two-year diploma is offered at Northern Lights College in Fort St. John. Students then have a choice of entering the workforce or transferring to BCIT in Burnaby, B.C. in order to complete Year 2 of the program and receive their credential.

Admission Requirements:
High school graduation or equivalent
• English 12 (pass), English 12 First Peoples (pass) or ENGL050
• Principles of Math 12 (pass) or Applications of Math 12 (C+) or MATH050
• Physics 11 (pass) or Chemistry 11 (pass) or Earth Sciences 11 or PHYS 040 or CHEM040 (pass)
• Applicants who do not have secondary school and/or post-secondary transcripts that provide documentation of prerequisites should speak with an NLC Recruiter. In these situations, entry-level skills may be evaluated through the Writing Assessment, Calculus Readiness Assessment, CAAT or other applicable assessments.

Career Prospects:
Surveying firms, consulting engineers, the oil and gas industry, government mapping, highway, planning and engineering departments, and utility companies provide most of the job opportunities for Geomatics Engineering graduates. Employment may be found throughout Canada and around the world.

The Geomatics Engineering Technology Diploma program is accredited by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) as a technologist program. Full-time students may apply for student membership in ASTTBC. Graduates are eligible for graduate technologist membership and may apply for registration as an applied science technologist after completing a minimum of two years of relevant experience.
