The Conflict Resolution Advisor strives to provide a safe and confidential environment for students, staff and faculty of Northern Lights College to discuss and access information regarding conflicts, complaints or disputes.
Please contact the Conflict Resolution Advisor if you feel you have experienced any of the following :
- discrimination and/or harassment
- accused of discrimination and/or harassment
- activities or language which you feel are humiliating or demeaning
- a conflict or dispute on campus or while participating in a college authorized event
The role of the Conflict Resolution Advisor is to facilitate an effective and fair environment free from discrimination and intimidation for all members of the College community. This is accomplished by lessening , deflating or removing tension when interpersonal conflicts occur, and by promoting a perception of equality between the parties involved. The Conflict Resolution Advisor might attempt to resolve such conflicts by:
- Supporting individuals by providing information, advice, discussing effective responses, and facilitating communication between individuals.
- Providing assistance at the early stages of a potential discrimination or harassment issue.
- Promoting understanding between parties.
- Providing information regarding College Policies and Guidelines for informal as well as formal procedures.
- Offering education and training workshops ( see Dispute Resolution and Human Rights section for complete descriptions).
- Acting as a resource in conflict resolution and related topics.
- Coaching individuals through their goals and options regarding conflict .
- Conveying your concerns to other individuals if you are unable to do so.
- Providing informal mediation (more information in available in the Dispute Resolution section).
- Listening to your concerns and frustrations.
In addition to the services mentioned, the Conflict Resolution Advisor is available to students, staff and faculty to provide information or training for individuals , or classes in:
- conflict resolution
- discrimination and harassment prevention
- anger management
- mediation
- negotiation
- communications
About the Advisor
The Conflict Resolution Advisor is Jim Zacharias (Zach). He is a trainer, coach and conflict resolution facilitator. He has 14 years experience with Northern Lights College as an instructor delivering courses and training sessions. He has been employed as the Conflict Resolution Advisor for Northern Lights College since 2002, after completing training in Discrimination Prevention through the Public Service Employees Relations Commission, and obtaining certification in Conflict Resolution/Negotiation from the Justice Institute of BC.
