Rights and Responsibilities
The College makes every effort to ensure that no student, guest or employee is discriminated against in any College program or policy on the basis of race, national origin, colour, creed, religious affiliation, age, physical disability, gender or sexual orientation.
STUDENT CONDUCT
College Expectations
NLC students, as members of the College community, are expected to conduct themselves with integrity, dignity, honesty, and mutual respect. As such, NLC does not condone disruptive or dangerous behavior, or other behavior which detracts from the provision of instructional activities, services or which undermines an environment conducive to learning.
Considerations for Unacceptable Conduct
- Extent of misconduct
- Whether the student’s behaviour was intentional or deliberate
- Whether the student’s action was isolated or is a pattern of repeated behaviour (which must have documentation)
- Extenuating circumstances
- Awareness of the inappropriateness or gravity of behaviour
- Impact on other members of the College community
Student Probation and Suspension for Unacceptable Conduct
Depending on the severity of a student’s unacceptable conduct, s/he will be placed on probation for one semester/term and a probation contract will be issued by the Campus Administrator. This contract will indicate areas requiring improvement and/or restitution.
The student will be required to meet with the Campus Administrator to discuss the unacceptable conduct to ensure that the student has a clear understanding of the consequences of his/her behaviour and the requirements of the probation contract. The student may choose to have someone present during this discussion. Please note: Depending on the conduct issue, additional learning services specialists may be consulted.
The intent of the probation contract is to explore opportunities for a successful outcome for the College and the student.
Once the student has met the recommendations and/or made restitution by the end of the semester/term, the probation order will be lifted. Should the student have difficulty in meeting the recommendations and/or making restitution, s/he will be placed on probation for a second semester/term.
Should the student continue with unacceptable conduct upon returning to the College following a second semester/term, s/he will be required to withdraw from the College for a one-year period. The grade ‘required to withdraw’ (RW) will be recorded on the student’s official transcript.
If a student’s unacceptable conduct is deemed more serious (please refer to Considerations for Unacceptable Conduct), s/he may be dismissed from the College.
STUDENT APPEALS
Informal Resolution
Students may appeal a probation contract, suspension or ‘required to withdraw’ decision. The first step is a written appeal to the Campus Administrator within three weeks of receiving a probation contract, suspension or ‘required to withdraw’ notice.
Please Note: In some cases, an informal approach for appeal may be inappropriate if a student’s actions are serious enough to warrant a formal process.
Formal Resolution
If satisfactory resolution is not possible through an informal means, the Dean must be consulted. If again no resolution is reached, a formal appeal may be directed to the Vice President Learning for recommended action.
