Students listened with anticipation as their classmates Macall Webb and Tyler Hitchmough delivered their valedictorian address on behalf of the class.
“As I look at these grads today and think back to 17 months ago, they were terrified to be here, and they should be,” said AME instructor Curtis Newby. “Seventeen months is a long time. Our instructors helped them on the journey, but they put the hard work in.”
NLC’s AME program is designed to train individuals wanting to work in the aerospace industry, and is available on the Dawson Creek Campus in the Aerospace Centre of Excellence, and in partnership with Okanagan College’s Vernon Campus; Okanagan students complete the final 14 weeks of practical curriculum at NLC.
“We’re very proud of our AME students,” said Dean of Trades and Apprenticeships Mark Heartt. “They put in a lot of hard work and dedication throughout the program, and it shows when they enter into industry.”
Marianne Pelletier was the recipient of the Above and Beyond Award, given in recognition of a student who demonstrates positive contributions to the improvement of the AME program and participates in extra-curricular activities within the program, college, and community.
“It’s a big responsibility in the real world to make an aircraft safety compliant and keep the shop as clean as it has to be, and these students are to be commended,” said Newby. “They did an excellent job.”
Other students who received special awards were Ethan Anderson from the Dawson Creek Campus, and Travis Booker from the Vernon Campus. They received the Student Choice Award, which is given in recognition of the student who has received the most respect and admiration from their fellow classmates at each campus.
September 2016 is the next intake for the AME program. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early through the Apply BC link at www.nlc.bc.ca to secure their seat. For more information on the AME program visit Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.
