Two days; seven teams; 122 athletes; 230 entries; 60 volunteers and personnel; 27 generous sponsors and community partners.
Putting together the Second Annual Northern Lights College Intercollegiate Rodeo took a whole community and a lot of dedication. With teams from Olds College, Red Deer Polytechnic, University of Saskatchewan, Southern Alberta Intercollegiate Rodeo Team, Central Alberta Team, Lakeland College, and our very own NLC team, it was an action-packed weekend of immeasurable talent.
The weekend kicked off on the evening of Saturday September 30th with drumming, song, and prayer to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. The Grand Entry included not only team flags, but also the “Every Child Matters” flag; the stands were a sea of orange in recognition and honour of the survivors and victims of Residential Schools in Canada. While the weekend began on a serious note, the community arrived in droves to support teams from all over Western Canada. With over 275 spectators through the door over the course of the weekend, our community didn’t disappoint in their unwavering support of local athletes, visiting athletes, volunteers, and incredible sponsors.
Northern Lights College, Engage Sport North, and the Northern Lights College Foundation would like to extend a huge, heartfelt thank you to Nathan Scott for drumming at the Grand Entry, and Elder and Residential School Survivor, Malcolm Supernault. We’d also like to extend our thanks to our helpful volunteers, the talented athletes, our announcer Dom St. Amand, Tammy Potratz for performing the National Anthem, Prophet River First Nations representative Lori Ackerman, local dignitaries MLA Mike Bernier and Dawson Creek City Counselor Amy Keaempf, our photographers, and of course our generous sponsors and rodeo friends:
