Alliance Pipeline Aboriginal Student Award (External)

Award Description: This is an external award sponsored by Alliance Pipeline that provides Aboriginal students with financial assistance to pursue post-secondary education and prepare them for employment in the oil and gas industry.

BC Hydro Trades & Skilled Training Award

Award Description: The BC Hydro Trades & Skilled Training Award program has been provided by BC Hydro to assist qualifying individuals for payment of tuition and other expenses in respect of certain programs at Northern Lights College. This Award program focuses on increasing participation in trades training and supporting the development of skilled workers in Northeast British Columbia. NOTE: additional funding to cover the costs associated with living expenses (defined broadly and including childcare, transportation, etc.) may also be available based on financial need and personal circumstances – be sure to include additional funding needs in your application.
Award will be distributed as follows:
• 50% will be awarded to the student after the student has registered in his/her program and successfully completed his/her first week of classes, and,
• 50% will be awarded to the student mid-way through his/her program. Student will need to have demonstrated academic achievement and excellent attendance.
Award Criteria: *Enrolling full-time in an eligible *Trades program (see list below) at one of the Northeast BC campuses of Northern Lights College in the September 2013 or January/February 2014 intake * Financial need (please complete Budget Information Form on page 3 – also be sure to date and sign the application) *On a separate piece of paper, applicants must also provide the following information:
• Demonstration of residency in northeast British Columbia, including current place of residence;
• Demonstration of financial need (please fill out budget form on page 3 as well)
• Cover letter including a description of education and work experience, financial need, career and educational goals and any volunteer/community involvement (150 – 200 words).

Application Deadline: For students entering a program in September 2013, the deadline is June 30, 2013. For students entering a program in the January/February 2014 intake, the application deadline is November 30, 2013. • Summary of financial need and background (education and work experience), including career and educational goals (150 – 200 words) Preference will be given as follows:
• Firstly, to members of the following groups: Blueberry River, Doig River, Fort Nelson, Halfway River, Kwadacha, McLeod Lake, Prophet River, Saul- teau, Tsay Keh Dene and West Moberly First Nations, as well as members of the Kelly Lake communities, and members of Northeast BC Métis communities;
• Second, to graduates of the North East Aboriginal Trades Training (NEATT) Program administered through the North East Native Advancing Society (NENAS);
• Third, to other Aboriginal individuals residing in Northeast BC

Light of the Rockies Lodge #190 Ab Hill Memorial Award
Award Value: 1 @ $100

Award Description: This bursary is administered by the Light of the Rockies Lodge #190.
Award Criteria: *graduating high school student from Tumbler Ridge enrolling in any program at any campus of Northern Lights College within a year of high school graduation *studies show improvement and dedication *proof of registration at College is required

Minerva Foundation for BC Women Award (Aboriginal)
Award Value: 4 @ $1,250

Award Description: This award is sponsored by the Minerva Foundation for BC Women. The award seeks to assist Aboriginal women in advancing their education.
Award Criteria:

• full-time Aboriginal female student
• enrolling in the fall semester or continuing on from the January/February semester
• any credit program at Northern Lights College
• academic proficiency
• financial need award will be in the form of a tuition credit.

NLC Foundation Award of Excellence
Award Value: 2 @ $3,000

Program Eligibility: All Programs (Entrance Award)
Award Description: To be awarded to a senior secondary student in the Northern Lights College catchment area who is graduating and going on to full-time studies in post secondary education at Northern Lights College. Award funds will be presented to students after they have registered and attended their first week of classes at Northern Lights College.
Award Criteria:

• an essay of approximately 300 words that will include the following: community involvement, leadership roles in school or the community, extra-curricular activities, future plans and how attending NLC will help those plans, answers the question: what community project would the student like to be involved with or instigate in the community? • Transcript of marks

NLC Foundation Entrance Award
Award Value: 15 @ $1,000

Campus Eligibility: Region Wide
Program Eligibility: All Programs
Award Description: This award was created by the NLC Foundation Board. Awards will be presented to students after they have registered and attended their first week of classes at Northern Lights College. 10 awards are available for the September intake. Four of these are designated for high school students with a deadline of May 30th. Six are designated for adult learners with a deadline of June 30th. Five awards are available for the January/February intake and these have a November 30th deadline.
Award Criteria:

• attending Northern Lights College for the first time
• dual credit students are eligible if they are enrolling in a program other than their dual credit program
• both graduating secondary school and mature students are eligible to apply
• enrolling in full-time studies in any program at the college
• applicants need to submit a brief (approximately 300 words) description of planned program and future career goals (provision for this is made on application form)
Application Deadline: May 30th, June 30th and November 30th

Paul Dampier Career and College Prep (CCP) New Student Award
Award Value: 2 @ $1,000

Award Description: This award was established in memory of Paul Dampier in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community as well as for his role as Executive Director of the NLC Foundation. Allocation of the award will be as follows: $500 of the award will be given out at the beginning of the student’s term and the final $500 given mid-way through the student’s term. Award Criteria:
• adult learner enrolled in full-time studies in the CCP program at NLC
• Registering in the fall semester
• financial need
• an essay of approximately 300 words detailing planned program and career goals and financial need

Pengrowth Energy New Student Award
Award Value: 1 @ $700

Campus Eligibility: Fort St. John
Program Eligibility: Clean Energy or University Arts and Sciences Programs
Award Description: This award was established by Pengrowth Energy Corporation.
Award Criteria:

• available to any student from the Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John or Fort Nelson area
• full or part time in the Clean Energy program or in University Arts and Sciences courses and planning to pursue a career in the environmental field
• applicants must provide an essay detailing an awareness of job conditions, challenges, and opportunities related to a career path in the environmental field. Students are asked to make contact with someone in the industry as research for this essay

Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC) Award
Award Value: 4 @ $1500

Campus Eligibility: Region Wide
Award Description: This award was established by the Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC). Two awards will be given to students in eligible programs that began in January/ February (December 15th application deadline) and two awards will be given to students in eligible programs that began in September (June 30th application deadline)
Award Criteria:

• full-time student enrolled in any of the following programs: Heavy Duty/ Commercial Transport Technician Foundation, Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport Technician Foundation/Level 1, Millwright Foundation Trades Training, Welding Level C
• applicants must include in their application a description of their career plan, their interest in working in the service, supply and manufacturing sector of the petroleum industry and any prior knowledge of the petroleum industry
• successful in their program

Spectra Energy Endowment Fund Bursary
Award Value: Up to $2,000
Campus Eligibility: Region Wide
Program Eligibility: Any Northern Opportunities dual credit program and/or concurrent apprenticeship
Award Description: These bursaries are designed to recognize the accomplishments and support the training of northeast British Columbia students registered in a Northern Opportunities dual credit program and/or concurrent apprenticeship.
Award Criteria: The following expenses will be considered by the bursary committee:
• Living and Travel Allowances: Students who live outside of the community where their program is being offered may apply for funding for travel expenses and/or lodging/living expenses while participating in the program.
• Equipment and Tools: Expenses related to computers, tools and materials needed for a student’s program of study.
• Practicum Placement Support: Living expenses related to student’s participation in hands-on work experience and practicums which take place outside of their community.
Additional selection considerations:
While bursaries are awarded based on greatest need and merit, the selection committee will also take proportion of students from each community enrolled in Northern Opportunities programs into consideration. Programs of study which address the greatest workforce needs across the region will also be given particular consideration.
