Dana Hall, the 2013 Valedictorian, received her Applied Business Technology credential from Board Chair Karen Simpson and President Laurie Rancourt.
DAWSON CREEK – The accomplishments of more than 380 students at the Chetwynd, Dawson Creek and Tumbler Ridge campuses of Northern Lights College were recognized on June 14 during Convocation ceremonies held in the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Hangar at the Dawson Creek Campus.
Students in 35 different programs offered at the three campuses were honoured through the conferral of certificates and diplomas. Credentials were presented by NLC President Laurie Rancourt, Board of Governors chair Karen Simpson, deans ofinstruction and program instructors.
Dana Hall, an Applied Business Technology student at the Dawson Creek Campus, was voted Valedictorian by her fellow students. The 23-year-old Revelstoke resident talked about the importance of overcoming her fears to pursue post-secondary education.
“To move on your own where you don’t know anyone, except your own family, is frightening,” Hall said. “The 10 months I have spent at Northern Lights College have been an adventure. I have been able to harmonize being a full time student and almost working full time.”
The key was reducing her self-doubt, and she encouraged each person in attendance to work hard at achieving his or her goals.
“Fear is a mindset. Fear is normal, but it is irrational,” Hall said. “We have the ability to overcome any obstacle that may come our way. Don’t let fear hold you back.”
NLC hosts three Convocation ceremonies each year. Other Convocation ceremonies are scheduled for Fort Nelson (June 18) and Fort St. John (June 21).
