DAWSON CREEK – Naomi Handfield, a student at the Dawson Creek Campus of Northern Lights College, is the 2012 recipient of the UNBC Award for Academic Writing.

The award, valued at $500, is presented annually to acknowledge an NLC student whose research paper demonstrates excellence in scholarly writing at a first- or second-year level.

Handfield’s paper was written for her English 100 class, and examined how tattoos in New Zealand are used for identification.

“I love art and writing, and New Zealand is one of my favourite countries,” said Handfield, who only became aware of the UNBC award while she was writing the paper. “I was looking through the NLC Foundation awards, and realized that the award was an option.”

Handfield completed the Visual Arts program in 2011, and was the Valedictorian at Dawson Creek Convocation ceremonies last year.

She recently was accepted into Thompson Rivers University to complete the final three years of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She was taking English 100 as part of those requirements.
