The B.C. Government announced last week that it would be investing $364,991.51 to create 20 new licensed childcare spaces for families in Dawson Creek.
Additionally, BC Hydro recently announced funding for a child care centre at the new elementary school in Fort St. John. This will create 37 new childcare spaces, and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2018.
BC Hydro’s support for child care in the region is further indicated by the availability of the BC Hydro Trades and Skilled Training Award, for which NLC’s ECEC students are eligible.
“With these new childcare opportunities appearing in the Peace Region, new ECEC jobs will be created, which graduates from NLC’s ECEC program would be qualified to fill,” Roe said. “In fact, NLC’s on-campus ECEC students will be graduating just as the new child care centre in Fort St. John opens. The timing really couldn’t be better!”
Our ECEC program provides an opportunity for students to connect with each other, with instructors and with agencies at a local level,” agreed Cindy Page, ECEC program chair.
“The on-campus program has been developed as a response to community requests about the need for more early childhood educators in the area,” she added. “Given the growth in the region, there is a huge demand for early childhood educators in Northern BC and this program responds to that need.”
