Eight NLC students from varying programs recently returned from a trip to Kansai Gaidai University in Japan.
The students were chosen based on their application and a recommendation from their instructor. They spent two weeks touring Japan and learning about Japanese culture and language. The entire trip was funded through NLC’s Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) project. GSO is a study abroad program of Colleges and Institutes Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada and works to connect students with international learning opportunities.
Jessenta Cooper, a student in the Social Services Worker Diploma program, was humbled by the friendliness of her interactions in Japan, and enjoyed the culture and the learnings.
“I enjoyed the kindness they showed us, whether it was greetings while walking to the school or when we purchased items anywhere…The classroom teachings were great. I really enjoyed how we got to learn about the culture, basic language, and take part in activities. Our group of people got along really well.”
Jessenta enjoyed the trip so much she has even offered to create a presentation for students who will go on this trip in the future.
This trip is just one of many that our students have participated in over the last few years; the students on this trip were able to meet up with Chelsea Flowers, who is participating in a full year of studies in Japan.
Through the GSO project, other NLC students have travelled to Jumonji University in Japan, as well as to the Philippines, Mexico, New Orleans, and Hawaii.
