In the early modern period, when Shakespeare wrote his famous plays, women in England were not allowed to perform on the commercial stage. However, this didn’t stop Shakespeare from crafting complex and engaging female characters that continue to live on in performance, over four hundred years later. Join Emily as she explores early modern English attitudes towards women and considers how these attitudes are embodied (and often challenged) by three of Shakespeare’s most celebrated female characters.
